Hello,

Louisiana Sea Grant and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in conjunction with Louisiana State University’s department of Renewable Natural Resources is organizing three Derelict Crab Trap Rodeos. During the moratorium of crab fishing in St. Bernard and Terrebonne Parishes we will meet work either on shore or in small boats to locate, collect, and crush abandoned or lost traps for recycling. To make this project a success we need your help. If you have a boat, that would be a huge help.  Also, we will be looking specifically for students willing to help collect data on continued fishing and catch in these traps.  All volunteers willing to ride along on other boats and collect data will be given a training and orientation to the project.

The rodeo will take place on February 25, 2012 and March 3, 2012 in Delacroix, Louisiana, and on March 17, 2012 at LUMCON in Chauvin, Louisiana.  Please feel free to share with anyone you know who may be interested.  Anybody interested in volunteering for part or whole days please send your email address, availability, any boats that can be volunteered, as well as any other questions to Paul Bangs. For additional information, please visit our website: http://www.laseagrant.org/crabtraps/

Sorry I wasn't able to make it back to the marina this evening. We were just trying to beat that Nash weather. No trout, but we did catch reds and drum. Dead bait or live bait(preferably shrimp) is the best bait by far right now. Once the water warms up artificials will start working again. Best areas are Lake Five, Bay Six, Lake Laurier, and the Texaco Canal System. Hope this helps.
